Buy Beans and Fish for Food Storage • March Prep Challenge #1

Our first preparedness challenge in March is to buy beans and fish for your food storage. This supply may help you during adversities such as food shortages, job loss, or natural disasters. If you live in a small apartment, or finances are tight, store what you can. Perhaps add one item to your shelf to eat now, and two as a backup for later. You can do this!

Buy Beans and Fish for Food Storage • March Prep Challenge #1

1. Buy a 3-Month Pantry Supply of Beans and Fish

To help you figure out how much to store in a 3-month supply of food storage, consider which meals you use canned beans or canned fish each month. Take this amount and multiply it by three.

  • Beans are an amazing source of protein and have wonderful nutrients.
  • You could also stock up on more than a 3-month supply if you have space and finances.
  • If you don’t want to stock up on canned fish, store canned chicken or another meat.
  • You could include small cans of beans, dried beans, legumes or canned fish.
  • Note: We will stock up on long-term beans in a few weeks.
  • Watch for sales throughout the month. If you live in Utah, take advantage of the great prices at grocery case lot sales at some of our local grocery stores.
  • TIP: Always rinse canned beans before using.

2. Make a Meal Using Beans or Fish

  • Look on Pinterest, Google or in cookbooks for a few recipes your family will enjoy and make a meal using beans or fish this week.
  • Some ideas are tuna casserole, tuna fish sandwiches, taco soup, burritos or a salad.
  • Save these recipes in a binder or an app like Plan to Eat to help with future menu plans.

I hope you do well with this week’s challenge and buy canned beans and fish during March.

Best wishes and look for the good,
