Our third preparedness challenge in October is to buy a winter coat and boots. Consider your climate and where you winter travel. Think about the various weather disasters that could happen in your area in case you must be outside in the cold or rain for hours or days.
A shipping or factory shortage could affect our ability to purchase fabric and clothing. So this month, stock up on fabric and thread.
Buy a Winter Coat and Boots
- A good coat doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should keep you warm and dry. Consider one with a hood and drawstrings that tighten around your face.
- Check thrift stores. Over the years I’ve gathered a large collection of various sized coats and boots for our out-of-town family members at the Deseret Industries thrift store.
- Keep coats in an easy to grab location in your home in case you need to evacuate. Closets are fine or on hooks by a door.
- Find a pair of boots to keep your feet warm and dry, and that have a non-slip sole.
Buy Fabric and Thread
- How much fabric and thread to buy is completely up to you if you have sewing skills.
- Choose basic colors with simple designs in cotton or cotton polyester fabric.
- Buy thread in basic colors like black and white.
- Sewing skills may be needed to mend clothing, so keep sewing needles on hand too.
- If you already have fabric, then organize it by color or fabric type.
After you buy a coat and boots, and stock up on fabric and thread, you’ll feel more prepared for this winter. Keep up the good work!
