Buy a Year’s Supply of Vitamin C • December Prep Challenge #2

Ahoy, matey! For your second prep challenge in December, buy a year’s supply of vitamin C. This important vitamin could prevent serious illness. We’d like to think there will always be plenty of vitamin C on store shelves, but we thought there would be plenty of toilet paper a few years ago, now didn’t we.

Our bodies can’t store vitamin C, so stow this important vitamin in your food storage for everyday consumption, and to prepare for a day when we don’t have foods with vitamin C.

What happens to our bodies when they go without vitamin C for a month?…scurvy!

  • Bleeding or swollen gums, nosebleeds, tooth loss, bruises, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, cracked fingernails, joint pain, brittle bones, corkscrew body hair, skin rashes, red spots, failure to thrive, irritability and muscle weakness. Abandon ship! Abandon ship!
  • The National Institutes of Health says, “Signs can appear within 1 month of little or no vitamin C intake.” Shiver me timbers!
  • It’s recommended that we get at least 90 mg. daily. A medium orange has 70 mg. of vitamin C, and 3/4 c. of orange juice has 93 mg. Aye, Aye!

“According to Oscar Pike, Brigham Young University professor of nutrition, dietetics and food science, 500 milligram vitamin C pills stored in a dark place at room temperature will retain enough vitamin C over many years to prevent scurvy.”

And, matey, while you’re out there looking for vitamin C for your galley, add some other vitamin grub to your shopping cart. Stay healthy this winter and buy that year’s supply of vitamin C for the crew.

Best wishes and stay healthy,
