Buy a Winter Coat and Boots • October Prep Challenge #3

Your third preparedness challenge in October is to buy a winter coat and boots if needed for family members. Consider your climate and where you travel in the winter. Also, think about the various weather disasters that could happen in your area in case you must be outside in the cold for hours or days. Start looking for sales or at thrift stores. You’ve got this!

Buy a Winter Coat and Boots

To decide what type of coat or boots you need, consider your winter weather.

  • A good coat doesn’t need to be expensive, but it should keep you warm and dry. Consider a hooded coat with drawstrings that tighten around your face.
  • If you can’t afford a new coat, find one at a second-hand store. Over the years I’ve gathered a collection of various sized coats and boots for out-of-town family members at the Deseret Industries thrift store.
  • Ever see that massive pile of coats in the lost and found at an elementary school? Maybe get your child two in case they lose theirs.
  • Keep coats in an easy to grab location in your home in case you need to evacuate. Closets are fine or hooks by a door.
  • Find a pair of boots that will keep your feet warm and dry and that have a non-slip tread. These may not be fashionable boots.
  • If you have coats or boots that are too small, donate them.

After you buy a winter coat and boots, you’ll feel more prepared for winter weather. Keep up the good work!

Best wishes and stay warm,
