September 2012: Monthly Food Storage Shopping List

It’s hard to believe that we are down to the last few months of the year. September is one of my favorite months because I love the excitement of children getting ready for school. My kids start next week, and some of your children have already begun. September is also a month that the weather starts to get cooler. Hopefully we can get out of the 90 degree weather here in my part of Utah.
This month our food storage focus is meat and potatoes. Because of the expense of meat, I’ve moved beef into October, so stock up on other choices such as chicken, tuna, Vienna sausages, Spam, ham and pork. Those of you with limited storage space may only want to stock up on a 3-month supply for your family. Most canned meat has a long shelf life (2 to 5 years), which is great because most of us use fresh or frozen meats most of the time.

Our family loves canned chicken, so I stock up on it because it is convenient when I’m short on time. But because of the expense, I don’t us it as often. My local Costco now has canned pork as well, but I’ve never used it. And Sam’s Club has canned turkey. My Utah readers may find some items on sale at the upcoming case lot sales. (I will post dates when I have them.) Compare case lot prices with Sam’s Club and Costco on my Fall 2012 Utah Case Lot Sale Price Comparison.
This month gather a few family favorite recipes that utilize canned meats. A few we love are Easy Chicken Tortilla Casserole and Easy Chicken Stew. The stew is low in calories which I love! You can add fresh vegetables from the garden as well.
Mashed potatoes are another family favorite. I store long-term potato flakes from the LDS Home Storage Center in #10 cans because I have the space for it, but I also buy a box of Honest Earth Creamy Mashed Potatoes from Costco for my 3-month supply. You could also store scalloped or other dried potatoes as well.
This month you may want to winterize your emergency car kit, so I’ve included some items to add on the monthly shopping list. Depending on where you live, items for the colder weather can be useful. This is also a good time to see if you have enough water bottles as well.
In closing, I want you to know that I love God, family and my country. The freedom to worship as I desire is extremely important to me. I am so grateful I have the freedom to share what I am learning with others. It has been such a blessing. As each of you gather and stock up, I hope you will share what you are learning with your friends. Pass it on. You may be the one that saves another from disaster and trials. President Spencer W. Kimball said: “God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other.”
Best wishes,
